Harry Warren’s songs have been highlights of the American songbook, including “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me,” “We’re in the Money,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and of course, “Lullaby of Broadway.” e show will be presented in an electrifying production directed and choreographed by Stephen Mear, raptur- ously received when it premiered in 2016 at Paris’s éâtre du Châtelet. On February 2, Lyric’s distinguished series of vocal recitals will continue with Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, at Lyric for the rst time in 15 years – his only Chicago-area appearance of the season. Recitals have always been essential in Terfel’s career, winning him as many admirers as his operatic roles. “Many longtime Lyric opera- goers have wonderful memories of Bryn’s thrilling portrayals of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Falsta , and Sweeney Todd, among others,” notes Freud, “and will jump at the opportunity to hear his magni cently expressive voice here in recital.” Eleven operas, a special concert, a celebrity recital, and a spectacular Broadway musical – 2019/20 at Lyric is sure to be a season to sing about! Roger Pines , dramaturg of Lyric Opera of Chicago, has appeared annually on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts’ “Opera Quiz” for the past 12 years and also contributes regularly to opera-related publications and recording companies internationally.
