We are excited to be opening the second half of this irresistible opera season with the much-anticipated return of this production of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel . This dark and whimsical production has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike and we’re sure you’ll fall under its spell, too. We’re also delighted to welcome our former music director, Sir Andrew Davis, back to the podium for these performances. His immensely distinguished three decade relationship with Lyric has encompassed hundreds of performances and scores of operatic titles, and it is a lovely treat to have him back with us. When this universally celebrated production debuted at Lyric 20 years ago, it took Chicago by storm. It did the same in 2012, and popular demand brings it back for you now. This riveting and inventive view of the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale does full justice to Humperdinck’s glorious score with a cast that includes some of the opera world’s most sought-after artists. Hansel and Gretel was my first opera at age four, and, between scoops of banana ice cream, I was hooked.
