Ravinia 2019, Issue 1, Week 1

7:00 PM SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 2019 PAVILION PIERCE BROTHERS † –Intermission– TASH SULTANA † † Ravinia debut PIERCE BROTHERS Twin brothers Jack and Pat Pierce have taken their unique brand of folk music from the streets of Melbourne, Australia, as buskers to capacity dance floors and rooms across Europe, North America, and Australia. The Pierce Brothers cut their first EP, The Records Were Ours , in 2017 and quickly cracked the ARIA top 10 and numerous iTunes charts. After a North Ameri- can tour supporting Tash Sultana, the brothers began booking dates across the US and Canada on their own in 2018 and released their debut full-length, Atlas Shoulders . The duo has most recently issued a new EP, Into the Dirt , featuring two tracks recorded live at Amsterdam’s Kookt and their current single, “Overdose.” The Pierce Brothers are making their Ravinia debut. TASH SULTANA Tash Sultana has been capturing ever greater attention as a live performing artist around the globe ever since several homemade videos went viral. Within a year, the same songs that were recorded on a small video camera in Sultana’s bedroom were being heard by sellout crowds at arenas and major festivals, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. Sultana was gifted a guitar at age 3 and has since self-taught more than a dozen other instruments to cultivate a unique one-person-band style that was debuted while busking the streets of Melbourne, Australia, and playing the city’s open mic nights. Sultana recorded the EP Notion in 2016 after the home- made video for “Jungle” gained over a million views in less than a week and caught the atten- tion of the Australian youth radio station Triple J, which recognized Sultana as the Unearthed Artist of the Year and placed both “Jungle” and the EP’s title track among its top 40 songs of the year. Last summer Sultana released the full- length disc Flow State , which earned an ARIA award as the Blues and Roots Album of the Year, and saw “Jungle” placed in the soundtrack of the game FIFA 18 . A new single, “Can’t Buy Happi- ness,” was released earlier this year. Tonight is Tash Sultana’s Ravinia debut. RAVINIA MAGAZINE | MAY 31 – JUNE 9, 2019 92
