Ravinia 2019, Issue 4, Week 8

RICHARD GOODE, piano A native of New York, Richard Goode parlayed his piano studies with Nadia Reisenberg at the Mannes College of Music and Rudolf Serkin at the Curtis Institute into a performance career that has been recognized with the Avery Fish- er Prize, a Grammy Award, the Young Concert Artists Awards, and the top prize of the Clara Haskil Competition. His first public perfor- mance of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas at New York’s 92nd Street Y over 1987–88 and a reprise at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall over 1994–95 both earned critical acclaim. Now a highly respected mentor himself, Goode was co–artistic director of the Marlboro Music Fes- tival with Mitsuko Uchida from 1999 to 2013 and is currently the international chair of piano studies at Guildhall School of Music and Dra- ma, a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and on the faculty of Mannes College. He also frequently leads master classes at the Verbier Festival Academy and Wigmore Hall, where he performs in recital every year. Goode regularly concertizes at London’s Southbank Centre, the Edinburgh International Festival, and Pianos aux Jacobins in Toulouse as well, and recent seasons have included recital tours to Amsterdam, Budapest, Madrid, Stockholm, and other major musical centers in Europe. The past year has been highlighted by returns to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, as well as to Lyon, Antwerp, Dublin, Utrecht, and Ljublji- ana, and in North America, Goode appeared in Philadelphia, New York, Houston, Detroit, San- ta Barbara, Montreal, and Toronto. Goode has been a featured soloist with many major orches- tras across North America and Europe, in recent seasons debuting with the Oslo and Netherlands Philharmonics and the Iceland Symphony Or- chestra and returning to the Los Angeles, New York, and London Philharmonics, Cleveland Orchestra, and Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. His discography encompasses more than two dozen recordings, ranging from and chamber works to lieder and concertos, most recently including a Grammy-nominated collection of Beethoven’s five concertos with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Richard Goode first performed at Ravinia in 1996 and tonight makes his third appearance at the festival. 8:00 PM FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2019 PAVILION CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MARIN ALSOP, conductor CHICAGO SYMPHONY CHORUS DUAIN WOLFE, director MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY CHORUS CHERYL FRAZES HILL, director CHICAGO CHILDREN’S CHOIR JOSEPHINE LEE, president and artistic director ANGELA MEADE, soprano † LEAH CROCETTO, soprano † JEANINE DE BIQUE, soprano MICHELLE DEYOUNG, mezzo-soprano KELLEY O’CONNOR, mezzo-soprano JOSEPH KAISER, tenor PAULO SZOT, baritone RYAN SPEEDO GREEN, bass-baritone MAHLER Symphony No. 8 (“Symphony of a Thousand”) Part I.
