SARAH MCLACHLAN Taking voice, piano and guitar lessons as a child, Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan was well prepared to record her debut album at only age 20. That 1988 record, Touch , received critical acclaim and spawned her first hit singles, “Vox” and “Streaming.” Her 1991 follow-up, So- lace , marked both her mainstream breakthrough in Canada as well as her first collaboration with producer Pierre Marchand, who has worked with her on every subsequent album. The al- bum and its Canadian top-40 singles “The Path of Thorns (Terms)” and “Into the Fire” earned McLachlan her first Juno Award nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year, while the latter song won for Best Music Video. Fumbling Toward Ecstasy (1993) cemented her international star- dom, hitting number 50 on the Billboard 200 top albums chart, achieving triple-platinum sales and earning a Grammy nomination. McLachlan made two career leaps in 1997: She organized the monumental “Lilith Fair” tour that solely featured female musicians and raised millions of dollars for women’s charities, and, with the release of Surfacing , she ascended to the top of Canada’s albums chart and reached number two on Billboard ’s. The multiplatinum album earned her four Juno and two Grammy Awards, includ- ing for its hit single “Building a Mystery.” Each of its singles made the top 10 in Canada, and two made the top five in the US, including “An- gel,” which was included on the hit soundtrack to City of Angels and won her a Billboard Music Award. McLachlan remained in the top 10 with her subsequent studio album releases Afterglow (2003), Wintersong (2006), Laws of Illusion (2010), and Shine On (2014), and she most re- cently released her second Christmas collection, Wonderland (2016) In addition to having earned 12 Juno and three Grammy Awards so far in in her career, McLachlan was inducted into the Ca- nadian Music Hall of Fame in 2017 and has been honored for the Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Vancouver and Edmonton, a free mu- sic school for at-risk youth. Sarah McLachlan first performed at Ravinia in 2012 and returns tonight for her third season at the festival 7:30 PM MONDAY, AUGUST 12, 2019 PAVILION SARAH MCLACHLAN RAVINIA FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA SEAN O’LOUGHLIN, conductor RAVINIA FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA VIOLIN David Taylor Concertmaster Mathias Tacke Principal Second Violin Bernardo Arias Lori Ashikawa Eleanor Bartsch Stephen Boe Jennifer Cappelli Daniela Folker Renée-Paule Gauthier Kiju Joh Helen Kim Michèle Lekas Kjersti Nostbakken Irene Radetzky Rika Seko Paul Vanderwerf Heather Wittels Michelle Wynton VIOLA Carol Cook Principal Rose Armbrust-Griffin Frank Babbitt Karl Davies Amy Hess Benton Wedge CELLO Steven Houser Principal Margaret Daly Larry Glazier Judy Stone BASS Collins Trier Principal Andrew Anderson Greg Sarchet FLUTE John Thorne Principal Alyce Johnson PICCOLO Alyce Johnson OBOE Anne Bach Principal Erica Anderson ENGLISH HORN Erica Anderson CLARINET Sergey Gutorov Principal Gene Collerd BASS CLARINET Gene Collerd BASSOON John Gaudette Principal Matthew Hogan Music Librarian Diana Ortiz HORN Neil Kimel Principal Daniel O’Connell Melanie Cottle Matthew Oliphant TRUMPET William Denton Principal David Inmon Michael Brozick TROMBONE Jeremy Moeller Principal Reed Capshaw BASS TROMBONE Mark Fry TUBA Andrew Smith Principal TIMPANI Robert Everson Principal PERCUSSION Joel Cohen Michael Folker HARP Alison Attar Principal Orchestra Personnel Director Terrell Pierce RAVINIA MAGAZINE | AUGUST 12 – AUGUST 18, 2019 90
