RACHEL A. TOBIAS, stage manager For the past 18 seasons, Rachel Tobias has man- aged the stage or assisted for more than 100 op- eras and six musicals at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Since 2009, she has spent part of each summer as the lead stage manager for opera programming at Ravinia. Tobias is also a stage manager with Kehoe Designs, located in Chicago. She has held similar stage management positions with San Francisco Opera, Michigan OperaTheater, Glim- merglass Festival, Chicago Opera Theater, and various theater companies throughout Chicago. CHICAGO PHILHARMONIC The Chicago Philharmonic Society is a musician–governed and driven, Chicago-based, not-for-profit organization established in 1988 by the principals of the Lyric Opera Orchestra. As the core group of Lyric players has expanded over the years, becoming a community of over 200 professional musicians, so too have they built up the artistic strength of the Chicago Philharmonic. The orchestra currently performs four to five main-stage concerts per season at Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Hall in Evanston in addition to approximately 50 performances each year in downtown Chicago as the official orchestra of The Joffrey Ballet. Previously a guest conductor with the Chicago Philharmonic, Scott Speck recently became music director of the orchestra in addition to performing those same duties with Joffrey, the Mobile Symphony in Alabama, and West Michigan Symphony. Past conductors of the orchestra have included Zubin Mehta, Andrew Davis, Itzhak Perlman, Jesús López-Cobos, Erich Kunzel, and its former music director, Larry Rachleff. For many years the Chicago Philharmonic has performed as the Ravinia Festival Orchestra under the batons of former Ravinia music directors James Conlon and Christoph Eschenbach in addition to other guest conductors at the festival. The orchestra has also been contracted in the past to perform at Symphony Center and other Chicago-area venues, and in recent years it initiated two chamber music series under its own auspices in Park Ridge and Hinsdale. With a central goal of bringing the excitement and engagement of live music performances to audiences throughout the Chicago area, the Chicago Philharmonic Society actively pursues out- reach and youth programs, such as Side by Side, a mentoring program geared toward middle- and high-school students, and NEXT!, which creates an opportunity for young talents to perform before Chicago Philharmonic concerts and be heard by the ensemble’s patrons, musicians, and conductors. Consistent with our company mission, Discover’s philanthrop- ic commitment is on helping people achieve bright- er financial futures through education and building financial capability. Some of the ways we fulfill this commitment are through supporting financial edu- cation programming in Chicago Public Schools, sup- porting afterschool programs with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake County and Chicago, and mentoring children through Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Met- ropolitan Chicago. Our support of local K– education efforts also in- cludes the teacher and student programs at Ravinia, where we’ve supported the Reach Teach Play Music Discovery Program for several years. The program serves hundreds of K–rd grade classrooms in Chi- cago Public Schools, providing students with unique music programs and training for teachers. In addition to Reach Teach Play, we support bringing financial education curricula and programming into middle schools and high schools across the country. Through our Pathway to Financial Success program (pathwaytofinancialsuccess.org ), we’ve teamed up with Discovery Education to create a free financial education curriculum that provides educators, stu- dents, and their families with tools and expertise to make informed financial decisions. Along with financial education, Discover is heavily investing in technology. Just as technology changed the music industry in the way music is produced, re- corded and delivered to customers, so has it changed the financial services industry and the way we deliver tools, resources, and products to our customers. Our Discover Campus Innovator Program at North- ern Illinois University is responding to the evolving technology landscape by providing students the op- portunity to work on and help develop new Discover technologies in the areas of mobile-software develop- ment, web-application coding, and person-to-person payment systems. The goal is to bring new, easy-to- use products and resources to our customers, while also creating a pipeline of job opportunities at Dis- cover in the field of technology for graduates of the program. As a leading direct banking and payments company, Discover strives to deliver on its mission to help peo- ple achieve brighter financial futures. We offer credit, savings, and loan products that help customers spend smarter and save more. We are known for our re- wards and service and driven by our company values. We believe giving back to our communities makes our world a better place and our company stronger. It has been part of the fabric of our organization since we were founded more than 30 years ago. Each year, the company and our employees contribute millions of dollars to charities. In addition, our employees do- nated more than 66,000 hours of volunteer time in their communities last year. Helping our communities is also important to Dis- cover cardmembers. Together, we have donated more than $28 million through our Cashback Bonus ® Pro- gram to our national charitable partners since 1989. We salute our employees, customers, and all those who support Ravinia and who are making a differ- ence in our communities. RAVINIA MAGAZINE | AUGUST 19 – AUGUST 25, 2019 102
