Ravinia 2019, Issue 7, Week 14
KESHA Kesha’s latest album, Rainbow , marks a new beginning for the singer. Based around inner strength and musical exploration, this latest number-one album finds Kesha collaborating with a broad range of artists, from Ben Folds to Eagles of Death Metal to Dolly Parton. In addition to garnering praise from the likes of the New York Times , Billboard , and NPR Mu- sic , Rainbow earned Kesha her first Grammy nominations, for Best Pop Vocal Album and for Best Pop Solo Performance (for the lead single, “Praying”). When Kesha released her debut al- bum, Animal , in 2010, the disc quickly shot to number one, with her debut single, “Tik Tok,” also hitting number one and going five-times multiplatinum that year, making it the top-sell- ing track in addition to the most played song of 2010. Kesha was ultimately named Billboard ’s Hot 100 artist of the year for 2010. Of her more than 13 million albums sold worldwide, more than 8 million are of Animal . Kesha has had nine top-10 hits on Billboard ’s Hot 100, including four that have hit number one on Top 40 radio: “Tik Tok,” “Your Love Is My Drug,” “Die Young,” and “Timber.” She took home the MTV Europe Music Award for Best New Act in 2010, and she has also been nominated for two American Mu- sic Awards, three MTV VMA Awards, and six Billboard Awards. In addition to performing on such television programs as the MTV Europe Music Awards, Much Music Awards (Canada), Echo Awards (Germany), X Factor (Australia), American Music Awards, Billboard Awards, American Idol , Saturday Night Live , and The Today Show Summer Concert Series, Kesha ex- ecutive produced two seasons of the series Ke- sha: My Crazy Beautiful Life for MTV and also wrote a companion book that gave insight into the creative process of the then-latest album, Warrior . Less than a year after releasing Animal , she released the companion EP Cannibal , which introduced the number-one single “We R Who We R.” Similarly, after Warrior was released in 2012, the EP Deconstructed followed a week lat- er. With “Praying” as the lead single from 2017’s Rainbow , Kesha has notched a multiplatinum single from each of her albums.
