Ravinia 2019, Issue 7, Week 14

INTERPOL While at New York University in the late ’90s, guitarist Daniel Kessler and drummer Greg Drudy struck up a musical partnership and soon teamed with bassist Carlos Dengler and frontman Paul Banks, forming the lineup of In- terpol heard on a series of EPs. Following 2000’s Fukd I.D. #3 EP, Drudy was replaced by Sam Fogarino, a veteran of New York’s punk scene, and the group signed with Matador Records in 2002, having become a staple in New York’s venues and built a following in the UK. A new eponymous EP was released early that summer, soon followed by Interpol’s first full album, Turn On the Bright Lights , which featured two tracks, “NYC” and “PDA,” that had been with the group from its early days. The disc drew comparisons to such post-punk icons as The Smiths and Joy Division, and the group’s cult following swelled in the midst of international touring and television appearances. Within a year, Interpol returned to the recording studio, cutting the 10 new tracks of 2004’s Antics , which went gold both in the US and the UK, where the group scored three top-40 hits in “Slow Hands” (a top-20 alt-rock smash in the US), “Evil,” and “C’mere.” The disc rose into Billboard ’s top 20, and the band hit the road for over a year, con- tributing the song “Direction” to the HBO se- ries Six Feet Under during the tour. Despite the frenetic pace of the long tour, Interpol had a new album out by the summer of 2007, as well as a major-label deal with Capitol Records. The new collection, Out Love to Admire , became a top-five hit both in the US and the UK, with the single “The Heinrich Maneuver” becoming its best charting single at home. After announcing a return to Matador in 2010, Interpol revealed that its fourth album would be self-titled and was Dengler’s final appearance with the group. El Pintor (2014) put the band back in Billboard ’s top 10 after a brief hiatus. This May, Interpol re- leased the EP A Fine Mess , featuring additional material from 2018’s LP Marauder . Interpol is making its Ravinia debut. 2:30 PM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2019 MARTIN THEATRE FIESTA RAVINIA BOBBY SANABRIA MULTIVERSE BIG BAND † West Side Story Reimagined Act I Intro Prologue (arr.
