BOBBY SANABRIA A seven-time Grammy nominee as a bandleader, noted percussionist, composer, arranger, conduc- tor, producer, educator, and filmmaker Bobby Sanabria was born and raised in the South Bronx of New York with Puerto Rican heritage. He has been the drummer for Afro-Cuban jazz pioneer Mario Bauzá, touring and recording three CDs— two of which earned Grammy nominations— with the bandleader, as well as wide array of other artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, The Mills Brothers, Ray Barret- to, Luis “Perico” Ortiz, Celia Cruz, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Jon Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Phil Wilson, Michelle Shocked, and Mongo Santam- aria (with whom he started his career). Addi- tionally, he has guest conducted and performed as a soloist with such ensembles as the WDR Big Band, the Airmen of Note, and the U.S. Jazz Am- bassadors, among many others. Sanabria’s first big-band recording, Live & in Clave , was nom- inated for a Grammy in 2001, and he received another nod in 2003 for  Years of Mambo: A Tribute to Perez Prado . His 2007 disc Big Band Urban Folktales was the first Latin jazz recording to reach number one on the national JazzWeek charts. He subsequently earned a pair of Latin Grammy nominations for 2009’s Kenya Revisited Live —a reworking of music from Machito’s land- mark album, recorded with the Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra that Sanabria directs at the Manhattan School of Music—and 2011’s Tito Puente Mas- terworks Live with that same ensemble. Another two Grammy nods followed his 2012 big band recording Multiverse , inspired by the writings of Mexican author Octavio Paz. Sanabria was an as- sociate producer and featured interviewee in the award-winning documentaries The Palladium: Where Mambo Was King (2003) and Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale (2006), for which he also composed the score, and in 2017 he was a consultant and host on We Like It Like That: The Story of Latin Boogaloo and the score composer for Some Girls . DRUM! Magazine named him Percussionist of the Year in 2005, and he was also named 2011 and 2013 Percussionist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, which has named his most recent album, West Side Story Reimagined , Record of the Year for 2019. Bobby Sanabria is making his Ravinia debut. 6:00 PM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2019 PAVILION FIESTA RAVINIA CHICAGO PHILHARMONIC THIAGO TIBERIO, conductor † Directed by LEE UNKRICH Co-Directed by ADRIAN MOLINA Produced by DARLA K.
