LENNY KRAVITZ A New York native raised in Los Angeles, Len- ny Kravitz sang with the California Boys Choir until his teens and was surrounded by music from such jazz legends as Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Bobby Short, and Miles Davis. With influences also including ’60s and ’70s soul, rock, and funk, Kravitz and his back- to-basics approach to his music amid the late ’80s’ glam rock caught the attention of the Vir- gin label, which issued his debut album, Let Love Rule , in 1989. Shortly thereafter, he co-wrote and co-produced Madonna’s smash-hit single “Justi- fy My Love,” the music video of which was noto- riously banned from MTV. Kravitz entered (and has since remained in) Billboard ’s top 40 with his 1991 follow-up Mama Said , while 1993’s Are You Gonna Go My Way broke into the top 20, also topping charts around the world on the strength of the number-one rock hit title track. Starting with his next number-one hit—“Fly Away,” off his 1998 album, 5 —Kravitz began a four-year run as the winner of the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, a record that still stands today, also winning for “Again” (off his 2000 greatest hits album), “Dig In” (off 2001’s Lenny ), and his rendition of “American Woman” (from the soundtrack to Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me ). His film credits also include supporting roles in Precious (2009), The Butler (2013), and the first two films of the Hun- ger Games series, and in 2016 he branched into TV with a guest role on FX’s Better Things and a recurring role on Fox’s Star . In 2011, Kravitz was made an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, one of France’s highest honors, and released his first album away from Virgin, Black and White America . Kravitz’s 10th studio album, Strut , was released in 2014, and he performed on the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Katy Perry early the following year.
