Ravinia 2021 - Issue 2

PLATON (ALSOP) MARIN ALSOP, Chief Conductor and Curator Following two highly successful seasons highlighting works created or championed by Leonard Bernstein, Marin Alsop returns to Ravinia as the festival’s Chief Conductor and Cu- rator, leading three weeks of performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She began her professional education at Yale University at 16 and within six years earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in violin at The Juilliard School; both institutions have awarded her an honorary doctorate. Alsop’s career surged ahead in 1989 when she became the first woman to be awarded the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize from Tan- glewood, where she became a protégé of Bernstein. She is the only conductor to have been awarded a MacArthur Fellow- ship, is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music and Royal Philharmonic Society, and was recently appointed the director of graduate conducting at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. To nurture the careers of female conductors, in 2002 she founded a fellowship program that was renamed in her honor, as the Taki Alsop Conducting Fel- lowship, in 2020. In addition to her role at Ravinia, Alsop is Chief Conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orches- tra, performing at the Konzerthaus and Musikverein, and the first Music Director of the National Orchestral Institute + Fes- tival at the University of Maryland, where she leads a conduc- tor academy. This year she became Music Director Laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, concluding a 14-year tenure that included overseas touring and award-winning re- cordings as well as the founding of the OrchKids youth music initiative, and she is Conductor of Honour of Brazil’s São Paulo Symphony Orchestra following her seven years as its principal conductor and music director. In addition to regular engage- ments with the CSO and the Cleveland and Philadelphia Or- chestras, Alsop has long-standing relationships with the Lon- don Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras and frequently guests with the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Royal Concertgebouw, and La Scala Orchestras. Her extensive discography has earned multiple Gramophone Awards and includes acclaimed Brahms, Dvořák, and Prokofiev cycles on Naxos and further recordings on Decca, Harmonia Mundi, and Sony Classical. Marin Alsop made her Ravinia and CSO debuts in 2002 and is entering her seventh season at the festival.
