THE ZAPPA BAND Frank Zappa alumni Mike Keneally (1987–88), Scott Thunes (1981–88), Ray White (1976–84), and Robert Martin (1981–88)—each of whom played in the studio and on the road with Zappa during his career—comprise The Zappa Band, with Zappa Plays Zappa tour alumni Jamie Kime and Joe Travers rounding out the ensemble. Three even appear on Zappa 88: The Last US Show , the latest disc issued by Zappa Records and Universal Music. Mike Keneally was 25 when he joined Frank Zappa’s band, and he’s since played alongside Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Devin Townsend; been a member of Dethklok; composed with Andy Partridge of XTC; written orchestral commissions for Holland’s Metropole Orkest; and made over 30 albums, both solo and with his band Beer For Dolphins. Scott Thunes spent years steeped in late ’60s and early ’70s rock, jazz, and fusion, Zappa’s early Mothers of Invention work, and music classes at junior college when he joined Zappa’s band. He played electric bass guitar and synth bass, sang vocals, and became rehearsal director in 1984. Now he’s the Rock Band Teaching Artist at the Marin School of the Arts. Gui- tarist and vocalist Ray White got his first instrument at 15 and played his first show two weeks later. After four years in the Air Force, he landed in San Francisco, playing with Eloise Laws, Lee Oskar, Greg Errico, and Lady Bianca, who recommended White to Zappa. Alongside Zappa, he played on several albums and tours and learned from one of the world’s greatest composers. The son of two opera singers, Robert Martin is a powerful vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and conservatory-trained French horn player who has worked extensively with top artists like Zappa, Etta James, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, and Michael McDonald. He has composed for primetime TV as well as mixed and mastered top-20 hits in various genres. Guitarist Jamie Kime has played with the likes of Jewel, Dr. John, and Frankie Valli in addition to Zappa Plays Zappa, who he won a Grammy with, as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Czech National Symphony, performing Zappa’s works. He frequently plays The Baked Potato jazz club in Los Angeles and is on the faculty of The Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. Berklee grad Joe Travers moved to Los Angeles in 1992 and joined Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa’s group Z the following year. He’s also played with Duran Duran, Lisa Loeb, Billy Idol, and Eric Johnson, among others. When not on the road, he’s the “Vaultmeister” for the Zappa Trust, archiving and preserving Frank Zappa’s legacy. The Zappa Band is making its Ravinia debut. RAVINIA.ORG • RAVINIA MAGAZINE 47
