Born to sarod master Haafiz Ali Khan, he gave his first per- formance at age 6 and is credited with rein- venting the technique of playing the sarod. Over the course his more than six-decade career, Khan has been distinguished with a broad range of honors, including a Grammy nomination, the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award, UNICEF’s National Ambassa- dorship, and the Fukuoka City cultural grand prize. His performances have similarly had a wide reach, featured at major venues such as Carnegie Hall and Royal Albert Hall as well as the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Sa- maagam , his first sarod concerto, has been performed by the Britten Sinfonia, Orchestre National d’Île de France, Orchestre d’Auvergne, London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, which premiered the work in 2008. Following the 2017 release of their album Peace Worshipers with Affetto Records and Naxos, Khan and his sons and disciples Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash were honored with the Global Music Awards’ gold medal, recognizing their outstanding contributions to global music and excellence in the classical music sphere. The trio was featured on the 2018 UN Day Concert with the Refugee Orchestra Project led by Lidiya Yankovskaya, a program dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and themed on traditions of peace and nonviolence, and also collaborated with guitarist Sharon Isbin on Strings for Peace, a 2019 tour and 2020 album. Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash each began playing the sarod at age 8. The elder brother, Amaan, made his international debut at the 1986 Festival of India in Moscow, and both first performed in the United States in 1991 at a concert of the Asia Society in New York. Ayaan joined Khan to help inaugurate the Dalai Lama’s Sacred Music Festival in 2000, and they both contributed to the score for Rodger Christian’s 2005 film American Daylight . Tonight the Amjad Ali Khan Trio is making its Ravinia debut.
