Her instrumentation and embrace of multifaceted jazz expanded on 2008’s Esperanza , which tilted toward the top of Billboard ’s Contemporary Jazz chart within a month of its release. Numerous crit- ical raves and appearances followed, includ- ing an invitation by President Barack Obama to perform at both the White House and the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony. Spald- ing further expanded her sound and reach in 2010 with Chamber Music Society , which would shortly make her the first and only jazz artist to take the Best New Artist Grammy. The attention landed her in Billboard ’s top 40 and atop the jazz charts for several weeks. Spalding’s next release, 2012’s Radio Music So- ciety , featured a massive cast of guests, includ- ing Joe Lovano—whose Grammy-nominated Bird Songs she contributed to the year be- fore—and Lalah Hathaway. A critical darling, it launched her into Billboard ’s top 10 and net- ted her another two Grammys. Her own guest work grew to include appearances on albums by the likes of Janelle Monáe and Dianne Reeves. Spalding served a heaping scoop of originality with 2016’s Emily’s D+Evolution , a concept album revolving around the alter ego of her middle name. A year after her 2017 limited release Exposure , she dazzled with the Grammy-winning 12 Little Spells , on which each track was inspired by a different body part. While working on her latest album, the Grammy-winning Songwrights Apothecary Lab , spalding was also working with Wayne Shorter on the opera … (Iphegenia) , which premiered in November 2021. Around the time of her debut album, spalding earned a Bachelor of Music from the Berklee College of Music and was made one of the youngest faculty members in the college’s history; in 2018, Berklee conferred her an honorary doc- torate. She has been a professor at Harvard University since 2017. esperanza spalding first played Ravinia in 2012 and is making her third appearance. Hecho a Mano became a gold-sell- er in Colombia and received two top Shock Awards. The band made its international breakout with 2015’s Caja de Música , earning Best New Artist honors at the Latin Grammys in addition to receiving an Album of the Year nomination. Not only did that collection receive another Album of the Year nomination from the Lat- in Grammys, but its single “Bailar Contigo” was also nominated at Song of the Year and Record of the Year. In 2021, Monsieur Periné released the song “Volverte a Ver” with a con- test supported by TikTok to reunite fans with their loved ones after the pandemic. Another new track, “Nada,” was released in March in anticipation of a new album, which the band is working on with producer Rafa Sardina, who has collaborated with such artists as Ste- vie Wonder and Calle 13.
