SIAN RICHARD (OUNDJIAN); MASTERCLASS.COM (PERLMAN) PETER OUNDJIAN, conductor Recognized as a dynamic presence in music, Peter Oundjian has developed a multifaceted portfolio as a conductor, violinist, professor, and artistic advisor. Strengthening his ties to Colorado, from this February, he is principal conductor of the Colorado Symphony in ad- dition to music director of the Colorado Mu- sic Festival, which he has served since 2019. Now carrying the title Conductor Emeritus, Oundjian distinguished his 14-year tenure as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra by reimagining the ensemble’s pro- gramming, international stature, audience development, and touring, as well as spear- heading a number of acclaimed recordings, garnering a Grammy nomination in 2018 and a Juno Award for a collection of Vaughan Williams’s orchestral works in 2019. He led the orchestra on several international tours to Europe and the United States, conducting the first performance by a North American orchestra at Reykjavik’s Harpa Hall in 2014. From 2012 to 2018 Oundjian also served as music director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, leading the ensemble on several international tours, including to North Amer- ica and China, as well as a European festival tour with performances at Bregenz, Dresden, Innsbruck, Bergamo, and Ljubljana, among others. His final appearance as RSNO music director was at the 2018 BBC Proms, where he conducted the orchestra in Britten’s War Requiem . Highlights of past seasons include appearances with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Atlanta, Baltimore, Dal- las, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Saint Louis, Seattle, Iceland, and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras, many of which he returns to this season. Oundjian has been a visiting professor at Yale University’s School of Music since 1981, and in 2013 was awarded the school’s Sanford Medal for Distinguished Service to Music. A dedicated educator, he regularly conducts the Yale, Juilliard, Curtis, and New World Symphony Orchestras. Peter Oundjian appeared on 20 concerts as first vi- olinist of the Tokyo String Quartet at Ravinia between 1985 and 1994, including a six-day marathon of Beethoven’s quartets in 1987. He first returned as a conductor in 2002 and is making his fourth appearance on the podium. ITZHAK PERLMAN, violin Violin superstar Itzhak Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. Immigrating to New York, he was propelled to the international stage following a performance on the Ed Sullivan Show at the age of 13. Following continued studies at The Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay, Perlman won the Leventritt Competition in 1964, launching a career that would include appearances with all the ma- jor orchestras and music festivals around the world. Not only a renowned soloist, he has conducted the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics; Houston, San Francisco, and Seattle Symphonies; Philadelphia Orches- tra; and Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, National, Montreal, Pittsburgh, and Toronto Sympho- ny Orchestras, also raising his baton to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as its principal guest conductor 2001–5 and to the Chica- go Symphony Orchestra at both Symphony Center and Ravinia. Overseas he has led the English Chamber Orchestra, Royal Con- certgebouw Orchestra, and Berlin, London, and Israel Philharmonics. Perlman’s storied relationship with the Israel Philharmonic in- cludes the orchestra’s first appearances in Chi- na, India, Eastern bloc countries, and Russia, a visit captured in an Emmy-winning docu- mentary. His extensive discography has won 15 Grammy Awards, and he was bestowed the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Perlman has collaborated with film composer John Williams on scores for Schin- dler’s List and Memoirs of a Geisha , as well as Tan Dun for Hero , and on the 2006 Acade- my Awards telecast he performed a medley of the five nominated film scores.
