PAVILION 8:00 PM WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 2022 SHERYL CROW SHERYL CROW Growing up in Kennett, MO, not far from Music City, Sheryl Crow shaped her musi- cal style on a steady diet of the soul and rock sounds of the late ’60s and early ’70s, from Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin to the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Her first big break into the music industry came in the late ’80s when she earned a spot as a backup sing- er for Michael Jackson’s Bad World Tour, then in 1993 she released her debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club , which soared to number three on the Billboard 200 and earned her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The album’s single “All I Wanna Do” became a number-two hit and won the Grammy for Record of the Year, while “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Strong Enough” and “Can’t Cry Anymore” also became hits on the way to the album’s seven-times platinum certification. Crow’s eponymous follow-up in 1996 and its top- 10 single “If It Makes You Happy” each won Grammys, as did 1998’s The Globe Sessions , from which “My Favorite Mistake” became a top-20 hit. Between those albums she was tapped to write and perform the title song to the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies . In 2002 she released C’mon, C’mon , which intro- duced the top-20 hit “Soak Up the Sun,” and the following year her greatest-hits compila- tion included a platinum-selling cover of Cat Stevens’s “The First Cut Is the Deepest.” After Wildflower (2005), Detours (2008), and 100 Miles from Memphis (2010), Crow hit even closer to the music of her youth with Feels Like Home , which was named one of the 10 best country albums of 2013 by Billboard . For her 10th studio album, 2017’s Be Myself , Crow reunited with Jeff Trott, who produced her seminal eponymous and Globe Sessions al- bums, for a return to that classic rock sound. Stating it to be her final full-length album, Crow released Threads in 2019 with collabo- rators ranging from Sting and Stevie Nicks to Jason Isbell and Emmylou Harris, plus post- humous Johnny Cash vocals. Earlier this year, Showtime premiered its documentary Sher- yl at South by Southwest. Sheryl Crow first performed at Ravinia in 2008 and returns tonight for her sixth season. A MESSAGE FROM MIDTOWN ATHLETIC CLUBS At Midtown Athletic Clubs, we believe active, social people live happier, healthier lives. That involves more than just fitness; it’s also about having a picnic on the lawn at Ravinia with friends and finding ways to engage with your community. For us at Midtown, being active is a way of life, and that includes being active in the community and giving back. Midtown Clubs support a wide variety of charities in the eight communities where they are located. In addition to Ravinia, we sponsor programs like the Tennis Opportunity Program in Chicago, ensuring talented young tennis players from underprivileged communities get tennis coaching, playing time, and academic tutoring so they in turn get college scholarships; Mindstrong in Montreal, the largest mental-health fundraiser in the province, raising over $1 million per year; and the Tour de Cure in Rochester, NY, a massive bike ride for diabetes research. In addition to supporting many local organizations, our biggest goal is ending genetic retinal disease, a form of which impacts our founder’s grandson. With support from Midtown, the Foundation Fighting Blindness has funded research and doctors around the globe focused on curing Lebers Congenital Amaurosis and other retinal diseases like macular degeneration and retinal pigmentosa. To date, over 50 children have been cured. They see their parents, siblings, friends, and the world for the first time! This cure is the first and only gene therapy of any kind ever successfully performed on humans. What was science fiction 15 years ago is reality today. Amazing. But there is still so much to accomplish on the way to our goal. Our founder’s grandson isn’t one of the lucky few whose specific gene is able to be fixed—yet—but he lives our mission of being social, active, and happy every day. He’s graduating from college this year, and if you visit one of our clubs this summer, you might just see him swimming laps in the outdoor pool.
