PAVILION 8:00 PM THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2022 8:00 PM SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2022 STEVIE NICKS STEVIE NICKS Born in Arizona, Stevie Nicks grew up across the American southwest, settling in Califor- nia during her teens. She joined her first band while in high school, and during her senior year met Lindsey Buckingham at a week- ly gathering in the community. A few years later, Buckingham recruited Nicks into the psychedelic rock band Fritz, with which they opened for the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin for shows along the West Coast. They remained a duo after Fritz disbanded in 1972, recording an album the following year— though not commercially successful, it led to their joining Fleetwood Mac in early 1975. With that year’s Fleetwood Mac and the 1977 follow-up Rumours , Nicks became one of the leading ladies of rock, with her songs “Rhiannon” and “Dreams” helping solidify the band’s status as one of the greatest of all time, the latter song becoming the Fleetwood Mac’s first number-one song in the United States. Following the double album Tusk , Nicks had penned more than enough songs that hadn’t made the band’s albums for her to simultaneously lead a solo career, which she debuted in 1981 with Bella Donna . The disc was an immediate commercial and critical success, with its first three singles—“Stop Drag- gin’ My Heart Around,” “Leather and Lace,” and “Edge of Seventeen”—becoming top-20 hits. Between Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage (1982) and Tango in the Night (1987), which featured Nicks’s “Gypsy” and “Seven Wonders,” she released the solo discs The Wild Heart (1983) and Rock a Little (1985), both platinum, top-20 albums, respectively featuring the top-five singles “Stand Back” and “Talk to Me.” Shortly after her 1989 album The Other Side of the Mirror and hit single “Rooms on Fire,” Nicks made her final recording with Fleetwood Mac ( Behind the Mask ) until the 1997 reunion tour that spawned The Dance . The following year, Nicks and the rest of the hit quintet were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Each of her releases since then, Trouble in Shangri-La (2001), In Your Dreams (2011), and 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault (2014), has been a top-10 disc. Stevie Nicks made her Ravinia debut in 2017 and is making her first return to the festival. RAVINIA.ORG • RAVINIA MAGAZINE 35
