Ravinia 2023 Issue 1

PAVILION 8:00 PM SATURDAY, JUNE 17, 2023 A Special Evening with MS. LAURYN HILL 25th Anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill MS. LAURYN HILL Between her mother playing piano, her father singing, and the record collection between them, Ms. Lauryn Hill developed a voracious trans-genre appetite for music while growing up in New Jersey. Raised especially on soul and R&B, she and Pras Michel formed the Tranzlator Crew while in high school. Soon joined by Wyclef Jean, the trio began per- forming in local music showcases. Around the same time, Hill took up acting and ap- peared in a hip-hop rendition of Shakespeare’s Twel h Night , which led to a recurring role on the soap opera As the World Turns and a part in ’s Sister Act . e following year, Hill, Michel, and Jean rechristened their group the Fugees and put out their rst album, Blunted on Reality , which provided a template for ’s smash hit e Score . Topping charts around the world, the album quickly became one of the best-selling hip-hop records of all time, going multi-platinum en route to earning the Fugees two Grammy Awards, for Best Rap Album and for Best R&B Group Vocal with the trio’s cover of “Killing Me So ly.” e record also featured an immensely popular rendition of Bob Marley & e Wailers’ “NoWoman, No Cry” as well as the original hits “Fu-Gee-La” and “Ready or Not.” In , Hill followed up with the neo-soul, solo smash e Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , on which she wrote and sang broadly about her experience coming up with and out of the Fugees as well as the rst birth of her rst child (“To Zion”). e similarly multi-platinum, chart-topping album quickly surpassed e Score , earning Hill Grammy nominations—then a record for a female artist—and winning her ve, including for Album of the Year and Best New Artist. A devotion to community service, including travels to Africa and other parts of the world to support access to water, has partly lled the spaces around ’s MTV Unplugged . and six contributions to ’s Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone , but milestones of the Fugees and her own work have Hill back on the music scene. Ms. Lauryn Hill made her Ravinia debut in and is return- ing to the festival for the rst time.
