JIMMY KATZ (METHENY) PAVILION 7:30 PM TUESDAY, JUNE 20, 2023 3$7 0(7+(1< 6,'(ɨ(<( with CHRIS FISHMAN and JOE DYSON PAT METHENY Born in Missouri, Pat Metheny began learn- ing trumpet at age along with his musical family, but he was soon drawn to the guitar and switched to the instrument at age . Within three years he was working regular- ly with the top artists in Kansas City’s jazz scene. A er graduating high school, Metheny brie y attended the University of Miami be- fore being o ered a teaching position; the following year, he moved to Boston to be- come a teaching assistant to vibraphonist Gary Burton at the Berklee College of Music. By the age of , he had begun playing inter- nationally with Burton’s band, and he made his professional recording debut alongside bassist Jaco Pistorius. By this time Metheny had developed a trademark playing style, blending exible, horn-like articulation with modern harmonies and rhythms simultaneously rooted in traditional jazz melodies, swing, and blues. Metheny reunited with Pistorius to create his o cial debut record, Bright Size Life , in , and the following year he teamed up with pianist Lyle Mays and drummer Danny Gottlieb for Watercolors and, in , the rst Pat Metheny Group album. Over the past four decades there have been several con gurations of the Pat Metheny Group, but one constant has been the bandleader’s thirst to utilize new technology and continually expand the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument and genre: he was one of the rst jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious instrument, he used the Synclavier for composing for years before the adoption of MIDI technology, and he has been the driving force behind the development of several new guitars. During that same time, he has earned Grammy Awards across a wide spectrum of categories, from Best Rock Instrumental to Best Jazz Instrumental Solo to Best Instrumental Composition, at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In he became the fourth guitarist to be inducted into the Down- Beat Hall of Fame, and two year later the National Endowment for the Arts honored him as a Jazz Master. Currently touring with his Side-Eye project, Metheny is releasing Dream Box on June . With his own group, Pat Metheny rst performed at Ravinia in and most recently in ; he also appeared with Gary Burton in . Tonight marks his th season at the festival.
