NATIONAL SEMINARIO RAVINIA Fostering students’ growth and learning through music education and performance July 7–10, 2024, at Ravinia Festival Inspired by Chief Conductor Marin Alsop’s artistic vision, Ravinia’s Reach Teach Play education programs this week hosted National Seminario Ravinia, a gathering of 130 students from 43 El Sistema-inspired organizations. Youngmusicians from17 states,Mexico, Canada, Greece and Sweden participated in four days of orchestral training and received mentorship from members of National Orchestral Institute + Festival (NOI+F). Tonight’s culminating concert features the Seminario students in a side-by-side orchestra with NOI+F under the batons of Alsop and Lead Seminario Conductor Jessica Altarriba. Additionally, in partnership with El Sistema USA® (ESUSA), eight of the student musicians were selected as youth leaders for National Seminario Ravinia. Highlighting the importance of student voice, the youth leaders led all Seminario students in community building activities, providing a pathway for future program leaders. “The opportunity to work with students so dedicated to boosting their life skills through the universal language of music is as important to me as leading any orchestra. I’m thrilled to have time over these four days to also meet with the educators who are such crucial mentors for these young people, supporting their personal growth and affirming that they are welcome and, in fact, already a cherished part of this national community of musicians.” – Marin Alsop, Ravinia Chief Conductor “Mentorship and engagement are hallmarks of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival. NOI+F fellows—some of the most talented musicians from across the country—are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with and perform alongside students from El Sistema–inspired youth orchestras.” – Richard Scerbo, NOI+F Director RAVINIAMAGAZINE • JULY 1 – JULY 21, 2024 66
