MANCINI AT 100 Henry Nicola Mancini (1924–1992) was one of the most celebrated film and television compos- ers of the past forty-plus years. His vast cata- logue of compositions includes complete scores for more than 88 motion pictures, six television films, 15 television theme songs, and 85 commer- cial recordings. The list of his honors was equal- ly impressive: 72 Grammy Award nominations (more than any other artist at the time) and 20 Awards; 18 Academy Award nominations and four Oscars; two Emmy Award nominations; one each of the Golden Score, Golden Plate, Golden Soundtrack, and Golden Globe Awards; an Aggie Award; a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Italian American Foundation; and four honorary doctorates. Mancini’s book Sounds and Scores: A Practical Guide to Profes- sional Orchestration detailed his approach to composing and arranging. Mancini was born on April 16, 1924, to Quin- to and Anna Mancini, two Italian Americans living in Cleveland. Following the growing fortunes of the coal and steel industries, the Mancinis moved to the small borough of West Aliquippa, PA, just outside Pittsburgh. Henry learned to play the piccolo and flute as a boy on instruments he had borrowed from his father. His skills developed quickly, and he soon joined the Sons of Italy Band (comprised of Italian im- migrants living in West Aliquippa).
