Ravinia 2024 Issue 5

1 DANCER | Sylvia Shaw Judson The graceful lines of the young dancer follow the spouting water of the fountain, upon which this sculpture sits. Judson’s works epitomize tenderness, honesty and serenity. 2 FORWARD MOVING LANDSCAPE | Dennis Kowal The rusted surface of this sculpture resembles earth tones and emphasizes the fluidity of the ever-changing environment. The abstract design seems to invite Ravinia audiences into the Park. 3 CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH | Charlie Kaplan Kaplan dedicated this sculpture to his grandfather and father as it represents how three generations are cut from the same cloth. While using one piece of metal, two people can face one another while also interacting with art and the environment. 4 UNTITLED, BAMBOO FOREST III | Cristina Iglesias Since bamboo is unusual in Chicago, this sculptor encourages viewers to think beyond the norm. The work requires close examination, as the intricate textures and details fade from a distance. It personifies the multi-layered experiences of Ravinia. 5 WIDMUNG | Zelda Wolock Werner This abstract sculpture, consisting of laser cut acrylic panels, emphasizes the beauty of light refraction. As one moves around the elliptical openings, multiple images and reflections are seen. 6 PIANO PASSION | Richard Hunt Hunt’s flowing sculpture of welded stainless steel honors Edward Gordon, who headed Ravinia for 22 years. Gordon initiated the internationally renowned Ravinia Steans Music Institute, a training program for young professional musicians. 7 NO. 116 | Sam Radoff Engraved on the bottom of this piece, one finds, “HIS ARM ENCIRCLES ME, AND MINE, AND ALL.” This piece is an interpretation of the circular motion of an embrace, capturing the balance of tenderness and power. 8 JOAN’S BENCH | Richard Hunt The bench, located outside the Freehling Room, was created by Richard Hunt for Stanley Freehling in loving memory of his wife, Joan. It features two intertwined hearts and it invites guests to rest there and enjoy the beauty of the park. 9 COMPOSITION INSTAINLESS STEEL NO. 18 | GidonGraetz Nature and sculpture meet in the garden where this piece becomes a living object, with its winding arm reaching upward. The surface reflects the scenery and the ever-changing sky and light. 10 MERRY GO ROUND | Robert Cook This bronze carousel, with shapes of children and horses, is an expression of timeless joy and continuous motion. It revives the historic times of 1904 when Ravinia was an amusement Park. 11 SATIN AND SMOKE | Joseph Burlini Satin-smooth and mirror-like stainless steel express drama and power, like smoke rising in the air. Many of Burlini’s sculptures are kinetic moving mobiles, popular throughout the Chicago area. 12 FORME DANZANTI | Virginio Ferrari The title of this bronze sculpture means “dancing forms”. It represents the motion of dance while encouraging interaction between the viewer, the environment, and the sculpture. 13 THE ROPE DANCER | Phyllis Kresnoff This piece personifies balance, movement and music all channeled together into the circus tightrope walker. 14 THE GIRL WITH THE VIOLIN | Sylvia Shaw Judson Judson is known for her charming garden sculptures which are often tender portrayals of children. Here the slender violinist is centered delicately in the water fountain awaiting her cue. 15 CAROUSEL HORSE | Richard Hunt One can almost feel the movement of this large steel horse, which pays homage to the origins of Ravinia, when it was a popular amusement park. 16 SURVIVORS ARE NOT HEROES | Sorel Etrog Opposing forces create a strong tension and are thought to represent an anti-war statement, perhaps reflecting Etrog’s experiences living under Nazi occupation. The bottom half is dominated by a circular motif while the top half appears to be an off balance ascending vertical line. 17 ELIZABETH | Albin Polasek This traditional statue of a child standing tall and carefree, conveys a sense of youth and serenity as she listens to the music around her. 18 TWO HEADS INVOLVEDWITH | Latika Katt SPACE, PLACE, AND TIME Working with live models, Katt’s bronze and aluminum sculpture focuses attention on thoughtful facial expressions, “...the reality of the lived moment….” D I N I N G P AV I L I O N RAVINIA MUSIC BOX BMO ROOF TOP & 25 22 19 20 21 23 24 26 29 30 28 27 18 17 31 32 PRESENTED BY D F C U W P N J M S F T T C S E T RAVINIAMAGAZINE • AUGUST 19 – SEPTEMBER 1, 2024 20
