RAVINIA’S STEANS MUSIC INSTITUTE 17 RSMI JAZZ FELLOWS Steans Music Institute. In September he will move to Boston to begin graduate studies on a full scholarship at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Anthony Ty Johnson , drums Ravinia Associates Board Program for Jazz Fellowship Anthony Ty Johnson is a highly versatile drummer, educator, and composer. Originally from Sacramento, CA, he earned his Associate’s degree in Jazz Studies from American River College in 2017. In Sacramento, he worked as a full- time music teacher for students of all ages while also maintaining an active role in the city’s music scene. In December of 2017, Anthony released his first original studio album, “Personality,” marking a turning point in his creative career. In 2018, he transferred to California Institute of the Arts in the Los Angeles area to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies, expecting to graduate in December of 2019. Along his musical journey, Anthony has studied with seasoned professionals such as Joe LaBarbera, Rick Lotter, Dr. Joe Gilman, and Mike Clark. Anthony is currently an emerging member of the LA music scene, spending his time gigging and teaching. Logan Maxwell , bass Bassist Logan Maxwell (b. 2000) is a freshman at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance under the instruction of Grammy- nominated bassist Doug Weiss. Logan has performed at various venues in the Westchester area, in numerous locations near his hometown on Long Island, and actively participates in musical activities of the New York metropolitan area. He is also an active member of his campus community, having worked on projects ranging from student-coordinated musicals to showcases in the Neuberger Museum of Art. He discovered his love for the acoustic bass in high school, having studied electric bass for many years prior. Despite his intense interest in composition, he has never published nor completed a piece of his own. Attending RSMI will mark his first major foray into the realm of composition. Cole Peterson , alto saxophone Grace Bersted Fellowship Cole Peterson, selected to join the 2018 JAS Big Band Sessions with Christian McBride, is a member of of the University of Iowa’s top jazz band, Johnson County Landmark. In high school, Peterson was a three-time State winner of the Iowa Jazz Championships as a member of the West Des Moines Valley Jazz Orchestra. He is a former lead Alto for the Iowa High School All-State Jazz Band, and the 2017 Jack Oatts Jazz Festival Outstanding Soloist. He is recognized now as one of the foremost emerging jazz talents, and who’s unique saxophone voice has been cultivated through studying and playing with some of America’s leading sax talent, including Damani Phillips, Dick Oatts, Ron Blake, Adam Larson, Ronald Carter and others. Micah Preite , guitar Micah Preite, a jazz guitarist, will graduate from the Herb Albert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts in December 2019 with a B.A. in Jazz Guitar Studies. Micah began playing guitar at the age of 7. During middle school and high school he played in multiple ensembles at the Colburn Community School in downtown Los Angeles under the direction of Lee Secard while privately studying with Bruce Forman, Sidney Jacobs, and David Koonse. Micah has received multiple awards and scholarships to further his studies including; Young Arts Merit, Jimmy Wyble Roger Bory’s Guitar scholarship. Rodney D Jone’s Scholarship, and Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival placement. Micah currently studies with Larry Koonse and plays in several trios and quartets through out Los Angeles. Nick Stahl , tenor saxophone Nick Stahl is a saxophonist and composer based in Los Angeles. Originally from Seattle, he currently attends the California Institute of the Arts, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in jazz saxophone, and a Minor in music theory. While there, he has studied primarily with Paul Novros and Steve Lehman, as well as with David Roitstein, Larry Koonse, Joe La Barbera, Bennie Maupin, Chris Speed, and Darek Oles. Nick’s influences, in addition to jazz and its derivatives, consist of a variety of styles, including salsa, highlife, Scottish, Persian, and Balkan music. He has had the privilege of recording at Capitol Records for the past three CalArts Jazz CDs, the latest of which features one of his own compositions. He has performed at an assortment of venues, including the Washington State Capitol, the Seattle Museum of History and Industry, the Los Angeles Theatre Center, and Art Share L.A. Jonathan Wiseman , trumpet National Federation of Music Clubs Rose Thomas Smith Award Jonathan Wiseman is a trumpet player, educator, and composer/ arranger based in Cincinnati, OH. He currently serves as a graduate assistant in the jazz department at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music. Jonathan frequently performs with the Blue Wisp Big Band, the Flying Circus Big Band, and the Original Farm League Big Band. Jonathan obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he studied both classical and jazz trumpet. While in North Carolina, he performed with the Piedmont Triad Jazz Orchestra, the Camel City Jazz Orchestra, the John Brown Big Band, and the Aaron Matson Nonet, as well as his own quartet. Additionally, Jonathan has toured the US and Canada with Natural Wonder, a tribute to Stevie Wonder. Prior to moving to Cincinnati, Jonathan served for 3 years as music instructor at The Enrichment Center, a community college program for adult students with disabilities in Winston-Salem, NC.
