12 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Agenda at a Glance Location/Room Theatre Br akout Sessions Communicating Student Data in Social and Emotional Learning to the School Community: Challenges, Strategies, and Purpose Session focus area: Communication Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Effective communication approaches In this session, participants will explore strategies for effectively communicating about social and emotional learning data with a variety of stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, and families. Presenters will share research and best practices that have been developed and informed by the experiences of practitioners in the field and will highlight mini-case studies of district work in this area. Session participants will collaborate in small groups to put that information to work as they develop communication plans and messages for a variety of external audiences. SEL Marketing 101: Tips and Strategies for Maximizing the Impact of Your Communication Efforts Session focus area: Communication Topic: Effective communication approaches Customizing your message regarding social and emotional learning is crucial in order to gain buy-in from necessary stakeholders. Yet, many of us struggle with how to customize a message and “sell” an idea—even one that we believe strongly in that has been shown to make a huge difference in the lives of children and families. In this workshop, we will explore some of the basics of marketing and how we can tailor our approach based on the intended audience. Participants will leave this session with tools and talking points that will produce results and move the SEL needle. Advancing SEL Under ESSA: How States and Districts Can Support School-Level Implementation Session focus area: Policy Secondary focus areas: Practice, Research, Communication Topic: Advancing equity The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) gives states the opportunity to create new approaches to school accountability and continuous improvement that address the whole child. With ESSA plans complete, states, districts, and schools need to figure out how to successfully implement them. An expert panel will offer guidance and resources to state, district, and school policymakers and practitioners on how to implement high-quality supports for educators that are informed by data. We will draw upon the examples of several states and districts to highlight successful practices. Presenters will address common implementation challenges and how they can be overcome.
