Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 13 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Morning Session 10:10am - 11:20am A Model of Excellence: An Extraordinary School With Character as its Engine for Equity and Student Success Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Communication Topic: Advancing equity What could be achieved if students and teachers focused passionately on character all day long—in every lesson, in every hallway? This session is an inquiry into the vision and practices of a remarkably successful school sited in an urban community challenged by poverty and gun violence. Through video, artifacts, and conversations with students and the school leader, this session will explore how Polaris Charter Academy in Chicago, a K-8 school, has put character and SEL at the center of school culture and achievement. Student achievement goes beyond academics to include citizenship, advocacy for social justice, and an ethical life. After the SEL Assessment: Effective Data Review for What Matters Most Session focus area: Practice Topic: Assessment SEL assessment data only benefit teaching and learning if educators review the data and use what they learn to guide what they do. This workshop describes data review practices designed to make the most of SEL assessment data. Participants will have an opportunity to evaluate their own data use practices. The session will then focus on how to structure data review team meetings to get to insights that can guide action. The workshop presenter will guide participants through a simulated data review team meeting using this structure. Assessing 21st-Century Skills in a Digital Age: Skills-Based Rubrics and Digital Badging Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Communication Topic: Assessment Join the Providence After School Alliance and Providence Public Library to learn how one community and one rubric are changing a city’s approach towards assessing essential skills in credit-bearing expanded learning opportunities. Additionally, participants will explore how digital badges are connected to the rubric work as a tool for youth to gain ownership of and market their essential skills to colleges and employers. Participants will learn about the successes and challenges of Providence’s work and participate in hands-on activities to consider how this type of partnership-based innovation can be applied in their local community.
