Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 47 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Mid-Day Session 11:25am - 12:35pm Leaders First: Developing School Leaders’ Emotional Intelligence Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Educational leadership Effective SEL implementation requires that leaders are socially and emotionally intelligent. Over the past three years, New York City Public Schools has developed Leaders First: a professional learning effort that provides superintendents, principals, and assistant principals coaching and training in emotional intelligence. The Star Factor training and coaching model focuses on the theory and practice of emotional intelligence in everyday leadership situations. Coaching is anchored in 360-degree assessment feedback and incorporates the development of emotional skills and competencies that ensure that school leaders act with empathy and cultural responsiveness in their interactions, decision-making, and practice. With leadership in tow, school-based SEL thrives! Leading SEL Implementation Systemically to Promote School Improvement Session focus area: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices, SEL 101 Using CASEL’s District Theory of Action (ToA), district and school leaders will plan a comprehensive and coherent SEL implementation plan based on the key activities of the ToA. As a result, school districts will be able to define SEL and why it is essential for high-quality education and will implement a plan based on research and the connections to academic achievement. Preparing Teachers to Support Social and Emotional Learning: From the University to the Classroom Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Research, Policy Topic: Integrating SEL into educator preparation programs Educators along the teacher pipeline, from higher education to the classroom, express a need for greater guidance on how SEL should be taught and how teachers can integrate SEL with academic content. This session will draw from a case study by the Learning Policy Institute that examines preservice and in-service teacher preparation at San Jose State University and an elementary school in California. The session will highlight concrete ways these programs, with the support of the Center for Reaching and Teaching the Whole Child, are preparing teachers to support students’ social, emotional, and academic learning.
