How to Create
a Beautiful Dessert Bar
By Jill Jaracz, CTW Features
Piece of cake? Who says? Dessert bars are fun ways to
satisfy a guest’s sweet tooth without breaking the bank.
1. THE CENTERPIECE
Don’t let that beautiful cake fool you. The bottom tier? Fake.
It adds elegance and keeps costs down. Bonus: You won’t
get upset seeing plates of half-eaten cake on tables.
2. BRING IN THE FLAVOR
Mix up your flavor combos with eye-catching cupcakes.
With a variety of cupcake flavors, you’re sure to please
everyone’s sweet tooth. Try a mix of almond cake with
raspberry buttercream and vanilla bean with traditional
buttercream.
3. MAKE IT POP
Cake pops are perfect
for those who just want
a bite. Plus, they’re super
easy to carry and less
messy than traditional
cake. Their smooth
surface also contrasts
nicely to the piped
buttercream frosting
on the cupcakes.

4 Trendy & Tasty
Cake Ideas
by Jill Jaracz, CTW Features
GO NAKED
Sliced layer cake looks so elegant, so why
hide it with mounds of frosting? People tend to
love naked cakes because they don’t have a lot
of icing and are not too sweet. It’s a rustic look
that’s elegant.
LOSE THE FONDANT
Today’s cake designs have a more textured look to
them than fondant towers of yesteryear. Try
a different spin on traditional fondant by mixing
it with gum paste to create cakes that look like
they’re draped in ruffles and covered with realistic
sugar flowers.
BRING ON THE SHINE
Metallic cakes are stealing the spotlight. Your cake
can shimmer in golds and silvers. If you’re not the
solid gold type, try using metallic accents on a
solid black or white cake and adding a pop of color
with a flower or sugar flower.
TELL YOUR STORY
Your wedding is all about the story of you as a
couple, so why not let your dessert do some of
the talking? Take a traditional flavor and turn it
on its head with an element of you. For instance,
for a couple who loves Jameson, do a Jameson
buttercream! If you are a whiskey-drinking couple,
don’t be afraid to find a way to bring that element
to your cake. Did you first meet each other on a
coffee date? Let your cake tell part of a story.
