| RAVINIA’S STEANS MUSIC INSTITUTE

This year, in recognition of the 30th anniversary summer of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute,

celebrations will be taking place throughout the summer season.

RSMI

30th ANNIVERSARY SUMMER

BRIDGES

Kicking off RSMI’s summer of celebration will be

Bridges: An International

Jazz and Classical Fusion

composition competition. This “bridging” of jazz

and classical music will exhibit works composed for string quartet and jazz

trio, created by young artists and performed by RSMI alumni in a concert

in the Martin Theatre on Saturday, June 9, at 8:30 p.m. Winners of the

competition will receive the David Baker Prize, named for the late jazz great

who served as the first director of the Program for Jazz. The concert will also

feature works composed by both of the directors of RSMI’s Program for Jazz,

and a tribute to Nathan Davis, who served as a director of the program for the

past two years before his passing in early April.

25 YEARS OF LEADERSHIP FROM MIRIAM FRIED

The 2018 season marks Miriam Fried’s 25th at the helm of RSMI’s Program

for Piano and Strings. As program director, Miriam Fried has led the program

to new heights, attracting the best young professional musicians in the world

and making RSMI the prestigious summer conservatory it is today. To honor

both her remarkable leadership as well as the 30th anniversary of RSMI, a

new piano trio by composer and pianist Timo Andres has been commissioned

and will receive its world premiere on the Bennett Gordon Hall stage on

Monday, July 16, at 6 p.m. Miriam will also celebrate with a performance

on the Pavilion stage, joining the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the

Tchaikovsky Spectacular on Sunday, July 22, at 5 p.m.

TWO ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS:

RSMI’S 30TH & BERNSTEIN’S 100TH

RSMI’s Program for Singers will have several special master classes

throughout the summer in celebration of the institute’s landmark year.

Vocalists will have the opportunity to learn from legendary American

baritone Thomas Hampson and Maestro James Conlon, among others.

The 2018 summer also coincides with Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday

year, and RSMI’s Program for Singers will be surveying all of the Bernstein

songs over the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The final concert of 2018’s Program

for Singers will be “Bernstein & Friends” to close out the institute’s

celebratory summer on Sunday, August 19, at 2 p.m. in Bennett Gordon Hall.

David Baker listens to a jazz rehearsal at RSMI.

Miriam Fried will be celebrating her 25th season as Director of

the Program for Piano and Strings.

RSMI joins in on the Bernstein 100th birthday celebrations.
