AUDITORIUM THEATRE 2018-19
| September 26 - November 16, 2018
Thank you for joining us at the
Auditorium Theatre as we begin
our 2018-19 Season! It is a delight to
welcome you to our National Historic
Landmark.
We hope you had a wonderful summer
— we certainly did! Campers at Hearts
to Art, our summer camp for young
people who have experienced the death
of a parent, joined us for the 14
th
year
to use music, dance, theatre, and art to
explore the healing power of creative
play. We continued our long tradition of
featuring rock legends on our landmark
stage with sold-out concerts by
David
Byrne
and
Neil Young
.
Dance for Life
continued to inspire and raise money for the Chicago Dancers United Dancers’ Fund with its showcase of
some of Chicago’s most acclaimed companies.
We also announced
American Ballet Theatre
as our Visiting Resident Company for the next four years,
beginning with its April 2019 engagement of
Whipped Cream
. In August,
Alvin Ailey American Dance
Theater
revealed that its 60
th
anniversary season will feature the company’s first ever two-act ballet:
hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris’
Lazarus
, a new work based on Alvin Ailey’s life. The Auditorium is
thrilled to be a co-commissioner of this work and the host of its Midwest premiere in March.
We took advantage of the summer months to get to work on a number of restoration and renovation
projects! Many areas of the theatre got a fresh coat of paint, and we also began restoring our north
inglenook in the Dress Circle with stenciling to match the Auditorium’s original design. We hope you will
look around while you are here and feel inspired by the new ways that we are continuing our commitment
to this architectural masterpiece. Learn more about the stenciling project on page 22.
This fall, we kick off a season that has something for everyone. We are pleased to welcome the explorers
of
National Geographic Live
back to Chicago and to our theatre for the first time to share the stories
of powerful and inspiring women, starting with
Dr. Kara Cooney’s
insight into a time in ancient Egypt
when women ruled the world; we will celebrate Halloween and the Day of the Dead with a screening of
the beloved film
Tim Burton’s
The Nightmare Before Christmas
, featuring live music by the
Chicago
Philharmonic;
we will present the legendary
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
, who perform on our
historic stage after a 40-year absence; we will experience the vibrant dance traditions of Mexico with
the return of
Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández
; and we will watch groundbreaking
contemporary dance groups in the first performance of our “Made in Chicago” 312 Series with
Ate9 Dance
Company
(accompanied by
Glenn Kotche
of
Wilco
on percussion),
Deeply Rooted Dance Theater
, and
Visceral Dance Chicago
.
It’s going to be an amazing season, and we look forward to having you join us!
See you soon at the Auditorium Theatre!
