The first dance is really a metaphor

of starting your life on the correct

foot together. That means you’re not

dancing solo; you’re dancing as a

team, as a couple.

If you don’t have any ballroom dance

experience, begin lessons at least

three to four months before your

wedding so you can feel completely

comfortable in time. The first dance

should be like an old pair of shoes,

not like a brand new pair squeaking.

Couples can choose a song and then

ask their dance instructor what will

work best with it, or go the other

way and learn a style first. The most

common style for the first dance is a

foxtrot – think the rhythm of Frank

Sinatra’s biggest hits – though a

tango or a swing are fun ways to mix

it up. Some couples even go with a

traditional waltz.

Whatever you decide, it’s best to

take at least a few lessons from a

professional. Your first dance as a

married couple is not the time to

start stepping on each other’s toes.
