Haeji Kim

Bruce K. Goodman, Jr.
Fellowship* from Mr. and
Mrs. Bruce K. Goodman,
Oyama Charitable Foundation
Fellowship
Haeji Kim (‘97), fromBloomfield
Hills, MI, began her musical journey with piano at
age 5 and soon switched primarily to the violin. It
wasn’t until about 8 years later, though, that she
encountered the viola. She fell in love right away
with the mellow tones of the instrument and the
unique voice she felt she could share with it, which
prompted her to switch a few years later, at age 16.
She enjoys playing in an orchestral setting, having
participated in the New York String Orchestra
Seminar, and finds another charm to solo playing,
most recently having participated in the 2018
Primrose International Viola Competition. However,
the art of collaboration has always held a special
place in her heart. Through Caramoor’s Evnin
Rising Stars weeklong residency and her summer
at the Ravinia Festival in 2016, she began to learn
more deeply about chamber music-making. Haeji
currently studies at the Curtis Institute of Music with
Roberto Díaz and Hsin-Yun Huang, and plays on a
viola by Joseph Grubaugh and Sigrun Seifert on a
generous loan from the Virtu Foundation.

Leland Ko is a 20-year-old cellist
from Weston, MA. He was most
recently a disciple of Cleveland
Quartet co-founder Paul Katz of the New England
Conservatory (NEC), and is now a sophomore at
Princeton University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts
degree. Prior to studying with Katz, Leland was
a long-time student of Ronald Lowry. In 2011,
Leland was admitted to the Perlman Music Program
(PMP), run by Itzhak Perlman and his wife, where
for many summers, Leland studied with Ronald
Leonard, among others, including Merry Peckham,
who helped cultivate in Leland an intense passion
for chamber music. From its founding in 2012
until leaving Boston, Leland was also co-principal
cellist of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
(BPYO) under the leadership of Benjamin Zander.
With the orchestra, he has toured all across Europe
– the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Germany,
Switzerland, and most recently Spain. The BPYO
has been an indispensable piece of the lives of
Leland and countless others, as it has opened his
eyes to new attitudes to both music and life.
