CHRISTOPHER O’RILEY,
piano
A Chicago native, pianist Christopher O’Riley
is known to millions as the host of NPR’s
From
the Top
, on which for the past decade and a half
he has introduced radio listeners to a new gen-
eration of classical musicians. He has also host-
ed the show’s Emmy-winning PBS lming at
Carnegie Hall in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma,
Bobby McFerrin, Midori, Béla Fleck, Joshua
Bell, Hilary Hahn, Michael Feinstein, and many
more guest artists. O’Riley has performed as a
soloist with virtually all of the major orchestras
in the United States, from the New York and Los
Angeles Philharmonics to the Chicago and Na-
tional Symphony Orchestras to the Philadelphia
Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony, and in
he joined the Academy of St. Martin in
the Fields for a two-week, ten-city tour of the
US presenting concertos by Bach, Mozart, and
Liszt. He has also joined the Saint Paul Cham-
ber Orchestra for a series of concerts featuring
Michael Daugherty’s
Le tombeau de Liberace
and the music of Górecki as well as the Moscow
Philharmonic for a tour of the United Kingdom.
With a repertoire spanning from the pre-Ba-
roque to the present day, O’Riley lives by the
Duke Ellington adage “ ere are only two kinds
of music, good music and bad,” evidenced by his
earning both an Avery Fisher Career Grant and
a four-star review from
Rolling Stone
. In addi-
tion to performing classical recitals throughout
North America, Europe, and Australia, he has
combined that music with original arrange-
ments of songs by Radiohead, Elliott Smith,
Pink Floyd, and Nirvana at such diverse venues
as the Istanbul Jazz Festival, South by Southwest
(Austin), Highline Ballroom (New York), Knit-
ting Factory (Los Angeles), and Ravinia. For
many years, O’Riley has collaborated in concert
with utist Sir James Galway and cellist Carter
Brey. His extensive discography has recently
included two discs of Liszt’s transcriptions, in-
cluding O’Riley’s reimagination of Liszt’s take
on Berlioz’s
Symphonie fantastique
, which the
pianist has toured with puppeteer Basil Twist
around the world, including at Ravinia in
.
Christopher O’Riley rst performed at Ravinia
in
and tonight makes his eighth season ap-
pearance at the festival
