JOSHUA GERSEN,

conductor

Joshua Gersen conducted his rst concert at

age with the Greater Bridgeport Youth Or-

chestra in Connecticut, and he made his pro-

fessional debut ve years later with the Greater

Bridgeport Symphony, leading the performance

of one of his own compositions,

A Symphonic

Movement

. He has continued to pursue both

disciplines professionally, graduating from the

Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied con-

ducting with Otto Werner Mueller, and the New

England Conservatory, where he studied com-

position with Michael Gandol . Gersen is cur-

rently the assistant conductor of the New York

Philharmonic, with which he recently made a

critically acclaimed subscription concert debut

with just a few hours’ notice. For the past ve

years, he was also the music director of the New

York Youth Symphony, and he was previously a

conducting fellow with the NewWorld Sympho-

ny under the direction of Michael Tilson om-

as. In the latter role, Gersen led the orchestra

in numerous subscription, education, and fam-

ily concerts, including its Pulse concert series.

Gersen also attended the Aspen Music Festival,

where he won the Robert J. Harth Conducting

Prize in

and the Aspen Conducting Prize

in

before spending the summer of

as

assistant conductor to Robert Spano, the festi-

val’s music director. In

, he served as prin-

cipal conductor of the Ojai Music Festival and

made his debut with the San Francisco Sympho-

ny, which has invited him back several times, in-

cluding to lead a program at the new SoundBox

eater and to ll in for Tilson omas on sub-

scription programs. Gersen has also conducted

such ensembles as the Toronto, National, India-

napolis, New Jersey, Alabama, and Jacksonville

Symphony Orchestras, and he was a recipient of

Solti Foundation US Career Assistance Award

in

and

. His work as a composer led

him to conduct several world premieres with

the New World Symphony and New York Youth

Symphony, and he has collaborated with such

composers as John Adams, Christopher Rouse,

Steven Mackey, and Mason Bates. Joshua Gers-

en is making his Chicago Symphony Orchestra

and Ravinia debuts.
