A native of Philadelphia, Jill Scott had not sought
out a career in music, but one found her none-
theless. A er studying to become an English
teacher, she began performing as a spoken-word
artist, reading her own poetry. On one occasion
in the late ’ s, ?uestlove, the drummer of

Roots, caught a performance and invited her to
sit in with the band in its studio. e result was
the song “You Got Me,” which was recorded with

. A er the single won the Grammy for Best
Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, e Roots
invited Scott to perform “You Got Me” with
them live, introducing her as its co-writer and
original artist. She subsequently collaborated on
songs with Will Smith and Common, and later
