PROGRAM NOTES
like this in Chicago, and now makes
it available to schools in Lake County,
too. We call it Sistema Ravinia.
One of the most famous conduc-
tors in the world, Gustavo Dudamel,
learned music through El Sistema in
Venezuela, and now he’s an ambassa-
dor for similar programs, like Sistema
Ravinia, all over the world. When he
comes to Ravinia, he will spend part
of the day rehearsing with Sistema
Ravinia students before working with
the CSO. Joining him for the CSO
concert will be pianist Yuja Wang,
whom he regularly performs with on
his home stage in Los Angeles, but
this will be their first time together in
Chicago! Almost 15 years ago, she was
getting ready to launch her career as
a concert soloist by learning the ropes
from the veteran soloists at Ravinia’s
Steans Music Institute. Now she’s one
of the best pianists in the world and
was even called “Artist of the Year” last
year by
Musical America
, one of the
top authorities on what’s going on in
the classical music world.
Music education was very impor-
tant to Leonard Bernstein, so today
Gustavo Dudamel is looked up to in
the same way. In fact, one of the piec-
es that he will be conducting tonight
is also the very last one that Bernstein
conducted: Beethoven’s Seventh
Symphony. And Beethoven, Bernstein,
Gustavo Dudamel, and Yuja Wang all
became famous for their music before
any of them turned 30—proving that
young people can make such a huge
difference in the world!
