East Coast, and Stravinsky’s
The Rite of
Spring
is about all the wild energy of
new life.
When
The Rite of Spring
was first
played a little over 100 years ago, the
combination of the powerful music
and its strange, new rhythms and
the stomping of the dancers made
the audience so uncomfortable that
the performance had to be stopped!
But we’re more used to the music
now, especially after parts of it were
included in the famous Disney movie
Fantasia
. While you’re listening, see if
you can tell the parts that the dancers
were stomping to.
In addition to being a composer
and conductor, Bernstein was also a
great pianist, and one of his favorite
pieces to play was George Gershwin’s
Rhapsody in Blue
. Both Bernstein
and Gershwin liked to combine the
classical music they wrote with jazz
styles because jazz is a very American
type of music (and they were both
American!); Bernstein even played in
jazz bands while growing up! This will
be a special performance because
tonight’s soloist, Makoto Ozone, is a
jazz pianist, so he’s going to play it
like Bernstein might have, perhaps
even improvising (that means mak-
ing it up in the moment) some of his
solos, like Gershwin did when he first
played it.
