Cataloging Mozart’s large collection of manu-

scripts took years a er his death to complete.

e examination of fragmentary composi-

tions occupied priest, pianist-composer, and

musicologist Maximilian Stadler and the Danish

diplomat to Vienna, Georg Nikolaus von Nissen

(who would marry the widowed Constanze Mo-

zart in

), during the summers of

and

. ese eventually joined Stadler’s catalogue

of Mozart’s estate, which assisted Constanze

in her e orts to secure a publisher for her late

husband’s compositions. Johann Anton André,

a composer and publisher based in O enbach

am Main, eventually purchased more than

autograph manuscripts, fragments, and nished

is collection included six fragmentary sona-

tas for piano and violin, three of which Con-

stanze authorized Stadler to complete around

fert. Levin also recomposed two of Stadler’s real-

izations and completed one work omitted from

Stadler’s catalogue.

with only a brief passage for both instruments.

Scholars agree that this fragment represents one

of Mozart’s late creations, though there are dif-

ferences of opinion on the exact date:
