Ravinia debut

ROBERT LEVIN,

piano

Pianist and conductor Robert Levin has been

heard throughout the United States, Europe,

Australia, and Asia. His solo engagements in-

clude the orchestras of Atlanta, Berlin, Bir-

mingham, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit,

Los Angeles, Montreal, Utah, and Vienna on

the Steinway with such conductors as Semyon

Bychkov, James Conlon, Bernard Haitink, Nev-

ille Marriner, Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, and

Esa-Pekka Salonen. On period pianos, he has

appeared with the Academy of Ancient Music,

English Baroque Soloists, Handel & Haydn So-

ciety, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment,

and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Roman-

tique alongside conductors John Eliot Gardin-

er, Christopher Hogwood, Charles Mackerras,

Nicholas McGegan, and Roger Norrington.

Renowned for his improvised embellishments

and cadenzas in Classical-period repertoire,

Levin has been a featured artist on recordings

for DG Archiv, CRI, Decca, Deutsche Grammo-

phon, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, ECM, New

York Philomusica, Nonesuch, Philips, and Sony

Classical. ese include Mozart’s complete con-

certos for Decca; Beethoven complete concertos

for DG Archiv, including the world-premiere

recording of Beethoven’s arrangement of his

Fourth Concerto for piano and string quintet;

and Bach’s complete harpsichord concertos with

Helmuth Rilling, as well as his six English Suites

on piano and both books of

e Well-Tempered

rst recording in a cycle of Mozart’s piano sona-

tas has also been released by Deutsche Harmo-

nia Mundi. A thoroughgoing musicologist and

theorist in addition to a renowned chamber mu-

sician, Levin has completed numerous Mozart

fragments and published them with Bärenreiter,

Breitkopf & Härtel, Carus, Peters, and Wiener

Urtext Edition, and he has performed and re-

corded them around the world. He is also a pas-

sionate advocate of new music, having commis-

sioned and premiered a large number of works.
